Knitting for dummies

27.11.09

In a previous post I mentioned my sudden urge to get creative - knitting, jewellery-making, etc. Well, I'm actively on the hunt for knitting classes as we speak. I have a desire to knit scarves, and jumpers for myself and my dogs!

Yesterday I was in Topshop and saw some lovely arm warmers that were made from cream wool. £14! I don't think so. "I could knit those myself" I said. I saw an awesome knitted headband in Misss Selfridge and thought "I could knit that!"
.
I also want to knit the boyfriend a Ron Weasley style jumper with his initial on ;) I'm so good to him!
.

A cool shop has opened up in Headingley, Leeds which I really want to check out. It's a shop called Baa Ram Ewe. I have got my eye on "Learn to Knit" for complete beginners and "Learn to Crochet". Have any of my fellow Leeds people checked it out yet?

Yum Yum Beads is a small bead shop in Leeds city centre which sells, you guessed it, beads! Of all shapes, sizes and colour. They do a jewellery-making lesson one evening so that's another idea of mine. I have made a few bracelets using material from their before and I'd love to make necklaces and earrings too.

Do you do anything creative? Share your thoughts and ideas in the comments box :)

  1. Oh my, that kitten is just too cute! I used to knit when I was little, blankets for my dolls and things :) My mum was going to knit a jumper for my brother but then discovered it was cheaper to buy one from the shops than buy the wool! xxx

  2. @amy - I'd love to be able to knit something exactly the way I want it instead of picking something off the shelf.

Also I'd really like to sell dog jumpers and knitted things in the future.

Instead of classes you could look on youtube for step by step tutorials? I know there are loads for crochet so there would be some for knitting too!

  4. Oh i love this idea!! I've knitted a few things in the past, my mum got me a brill book called "The Cool Girl's Guide to Knitting", when I was younger, and it had some lovely but5 simple patterns in. But a knitting club would be cool, I wonder if there is anything like that round me...

  6. I love baking, especially pretty little cupcakes and want to enrole on a cake decorating course so I can make them look even more pretty and get some expert advice, it's really annoying though as most of the courses in my area are run on weekday mornings, not everyone who likes cake decorating is an OAP dammit!

  10. We had the same idea!!!

Some days ago I thought about making some accessories out of...RECYCLED CARDBOXES and wool...how? well, when I go back to my mother's house I'll do a post about it and you will see ;).

I can't knit...but finding classes would be nice!

As for beads, i've recently found a paki shop that sells beads and all sorts of stuff to make your own jewelery...coooooool!!!

I look forward to see your creations ;)

  11. There are loads of videos on youtube and websites that teach knitting, and I cannot recommend the 'Stitch and Bitch' book enough for beginners.

I haven't done any knitting in ages, I should really!

  15. I used to be a regular at Yum Yum Beads but find it a little expensive. My tip is, get on eBay for inexpensive jewellery charms and findings. So much cheaper and there's loads of choice!

Baa Ram Ewe - I LOVE that place! I went a few weeks ago and thought it was so sweet. They were holding a wool dying class when I was in there, it looked really interesting. Although, there's a little cafe just across the road from Baa Ram Ewe (can't remember the name, it's just next door to Cartridge World) that does all sorts of crafty courses - knitting, dressmaking, interiors...

I really, really want to learn dressmaking. If I remember the name I'll let you know!
